EL BIERZO

El Bierzo is a Spanish rural area located in the north-west of the province of León, in the autonomous region of Castilla y León.

El Bierzo is a group of small valleys in a mountainous area along with a wide, flat depression, the lower Bierzo, which influences the types of crops grown.

El Bierzo has a very special microclimate, highly suitable for the crops grown in the area. It has a mild, benign, rather temperate climate prone to a degree of humidity, all undoubtedly due to the fact that El Bierzo is located in a valley.

It also offers an growing rural tourism industry focused on the beauty of its natural landscapes, such as the Ancares, or man-made landscapes, such as Las Médulas, as well as the Camino de Santiago.

Mencía

Main red wine variety in El Bierzo, accounting for 74.5% of the grapes grown in the production area.

Garnacha tintorera

Red wine variety which accounts for 2% of the grapes grown in the production area. It is also known as Alicante Bouschet.

Godello

White wine variety adapted to the terrain and slopes of El Bierzo. Accounts for 4% of the grapes grown in the production area.

Doña blanca

White wine variety. Accounts for 2.4% of the grapes grown in the production area. It is also known as Valenciana.

Palomino

White wine variety. Accounts for 17% of the grapes grown in the production area. Also known as Jerez or Listán.

Malvasía

White wine variety. Accounts for 0.1% of the grapes grown in the production area.
